The issues in this 1954 film could be taken from the pages of today's newspapers...unsafe working conditions, mining accidents, substandard housing, buying on credit, equality for women, discrimination against Mexican workers, corporate dirty tricks, eviction. According to wikipedia, the movie's writer, director, and producer had all been blacklisted by the Hollywood establishment because of their involvement with socialist politics. The movie got made anyway, using real mineworkers and their families as actors.
